TRAINING CONTENT AND TARGET AUDIENCE

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Description:

A seminar focusing on judicial skills, including evaluating and assessing evidence. This programme is very similar to the programme ‘ethics, bias and evidence’ which ran in 2020 and is based, in part, on materials used at earlier seminars as part of the EJTN Judgecraft programme. The seminar will address some of the psychological issues which can affect the way in which judges evaluate the evidence they hear and will also discuss judicial ethics, judicial resilience and issues of unconscious bias and how it can affect judicial decision making.

Expected learning outcomes:

By the end of the seminar the participants will be able to:
  • Remind themselves of issues relating to judical ethics and conduct,
  • Understand many issues relating to the assessment of the credibility and reliability of evidence,
  • Consider and apply strategies for managing the impact of unconscious bias on judicial behaviour and decisions,
  • Reflect on the pressures affecting judges and identify proactive ways to strengthen their resilience.
